Blog Post 1: Why Your Morning Light Habit Matters More Than Your Supplement Cabinet

There's a client of mine who used to tell me, half joking, that she felt like a plant that had been kept in a dark cupboard. Tired in a way sleep didn't fix. Hungry at strange times. Weight that wouldn't shift no matter how carefully she ate. When we started talking about her day, the picture was familiar. Up before sunrise, straight under artificial light, indoors most of the day, home after dark, screen in hand until bed.

We tend to think of light as a nice-to-have. Something that makes a room feel pleasant. But your body reads light as information, and it's using that information to run some of your most important systems.

Right at the base of your brain sits a small cluster of cells called the suprachiasmatic nucleus, your master clock. It takes its cues from the light hitting your eyes and uses them to coordinate timing across your whole body, hormones, metabolism, immune activity, digestion, sleep. Nearly every cell in your body runs on some version of this rhythm.

Morning light in particular does something specific. When your skin and eyes register that early, slightly blue, infrared-rich sunrise light, it sends a signal to prepare for the stronger UVA light that's coming later in the day, almost like the body's own advance warning system. It also flips the switch on your metabolic processes for the day and starts your melatonin production cycle running, ready for that evening.

This same light exposure feeds into a hormone called leptin, made by your fat cells, which tells your brain how much energy you have in reserve and whether it's safe to burn fat or better to hold onto it. When this signalling works well, you feel satisfied after meals and your weight sits where it should. When it doesn't, you can be eating carefully and still not losing weight, because the signal telling your body it's safe to let go simply isn't landing. Poor light exposure, especially too much artificial light at the wrong times, is one of the things that disrupts this.

And then there's the evening side of the equation, which most of us handle far worse than the morning. Ordinary daylight contains a natural balance of blue light and infrared together, and that pairing matters, the infrared helps protect against the damage the blue light could otherwise cause. Your phone screen and your LED downlights don't have that balance. They deliver a strong blue spike with almost none of the infrared that would normally accompany it. To your body, that unpaired blue light at nine at night reads as an urgent daytime signal, delivered at exactly the wrong moment. It can suppress your melatonin release by up to 99%. And melatonin isn't just your sleep hormone, it's a powerful antioxidant, involved in immune regulation, cellular repair and keeping inflammation in check overnight.

In Chinese medicine, we talk about the body's yang qi rising with the sun and settling as it sets, an idea that maps onto this circadian picture more closely than you'd expect.

None of this needs to mean overhauling your life. It can be as simple as standing at an open window for a few minutes when you wake, rather than reaching straight for your phone.

A few places to start:

  • Get outside, or at least to a window, within the first hour of waking

  • Try to get some bright outdoor light before 10am if you can manage it

  • A short midday walk outdoors, especially in the warmer months, supports your vitamin D as well as this rhythm

  • Watch the sunset when you get the chance, it's a signal to your body that the day is winding down

  • In the evening, dim the overheads, switch to warmer lamp light, and give your phone a rest before bed. If you have to look at screens, get blue light blocking glasses.
